Midlife Manoeuvres: Reflect & Discover – How Well Do You Know Yourself?
Introduction:
Could self-reflection be the key to increased success and happiness for YOU?
I can see now how gratitude journaling has helped me to grow. I started it after I had lost my job, and I evolved from ‘pat’ answers to enjoying the challenge of answering questions which make me dig deep for the insights.
Can ‘taking a good look in the mirror’ work for you? Research has proven self-reflection to be a powerful tool across many areas of life.
What Is Self-Reflection?
Self-reflection is a process of communicating internally with ourselves. It’s about taking time to think about our character, behaviour, and the reasons behind it.
When I started my own business, I needed to stand back and evaluate what I needed to develop in myself, to uncover how to learn, and to judge when to change course. Reflection has been my gauge, and my measure of success. It guides my inner compass.
This process helps us to analyse our thoughts, feelings, and actions, and understand the motivations and outcomes of our behaviour. The key elements of self-reflection are:
1. Analysing Behaviour
We examine our thoughts, feelings, and actions to gain insight into our motivations and behaviour.
2. Understanding Motivations
Self-reflection helps us to identify the underlying reasons for our actions.
3. Evaluating Outcomes
We assess the outcomes of our behaviour and consider whether they are effective or not.
4. Identifying Areas For Improvement
Self-reflection can help us identify areas where we can improve ourselves and make positive changes.
In a nutshell, self-reflection is a process of internal communication that helps us understand ourselves better, identify areas for improvement, and make positive changes in our lives.
Why Is Self-Reflection So Powerful?
Self-reflection is a powerful tool that enables us to gain insight into our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and make meaningful connections.
I’ve had to overcome inner beliefs that kept me looking outside of myself for answers. Reflection showed me these ‘rules’ held no water and encouraged me to step into experimenting with life just try things on for size.
This process helps us develop a deeper understanding of ourselves, their strengths, and our weaknesses. The core benefits include:
1. Personal Growth
Self-reflection enables individuals to identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to overcome challenges.
2. Increased Self-Awareness
Self-reflection helps us understand our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, allowing us to recognise patterns and make informed decisions.
3. Improved Relationships
By reflecting on our interactions, we can identify areas for improvement, develop empathy, and build more meaningful relationships.
4. Enhanced Decision-Making
Self-reflection can help us make more informed decisions by considering their values, goals, and motivations.
5. Resilience And Adaptability
We develop resilience and adaptability by learning from our experiences, developing coping strategies, and adapting.
By incorporating self-reflection into their daily lives, we can develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and make meaningful changes to improve our lives. This leads us neatly into wondering, why don’t more of us do it?
Why Don't More Of Us Self-Reflect?
Distraction can be a downfall for me. As I’ve come to know myself better, I’ve realised that I can get a lot more done if I ‘reward’ myself first. By doing something pleasurable before I put myself to work my concentration benefits massively.
There are several reasons why we may avoid self-reflection:
1. Distractions
It’s easy to get caught up in distractions like social media, television, or other forms of entertainment, leaving little time for self-reflection.
2. Fear Of Self-Judgement
We can fear that self-reflection will lead to self-judgment, criticism, or feelings of inadequacy.
3. Lack Of Awareness
We may not understand the importance of self-reflection or may not know how to approach it effectively.
4. Fear Of Vulnerability
Self-reflection requires vulnerability, which can be uncomfortable for some of us.
5. Unconscious Avoidance
We may unconsciously avoid self-reflection due to past experiences or trauma.
6. Prioritising External Validation
We may prioritise external validation and feedback over self-reflection, focusing on what others think of us.
7. Limited Self-Awareness
As a psychologist explained, people who spend a lot of time in self-reflection may not necessarily be more self-aware.
8. Fear Of Change
Self-reflection can lead to changes in behaviour, attitudes, or beliefs, which can be uncomfortable for us.
9. Lack Of Discipline
Self-reflection requires discipline and intentionality, which can be challenging for some of us to develop and maintain.
10. Unconscious Habits
We may develop habits that prevent us from engaging in self-reflection, such as avoiding solitude.
By recognising these barriers, we can take steps to overcome them and cultivate a habit of self-reflection, leading to greater self-awareness, personal growth, and overall well-being. What could go wrong?
Are There Downsides To Self-Reflection?
Sometimes I push too hard. I’ve come to realise if I’m too tired or too tenaciously focused on getting an ‘answer’ I shoot myself in the foot. Reflection for me is a period of gentle calm when I can lightly survey the facts and allow insights to come to me.
While self-reflective practice can be a powerful tool for personal and professional growth, there are other potential downsides to consider:
1. Over-Reflection
Spending too much time reflecting can lead to analysis paralysis, making it difficult to act or make decisions.
2. Negative Self-Talk
Self-reflection can lead to negative self-talk, self-doubt, and self-criticism, which can be detrimental to mental well-being.
3. Overemphasis On Past Mistakes
Focusing too much on past mistakes can lead to rumination and stagnation, rather than learning from experiences.
4. Lack Of Action
Self-reflection can sometimes lead to inactivity, as we may become too focused on analysing our thoughts and feelings.
5. Difficulty In Identifying Biases
Self-reflection can be challenging, especially when it comes to identifying personal biases and assumptions.
6. Time-Consuming
Self-reflection can be a time-consuming process.
7. Emotional Exhaustion
Self-reflection can be emotionally draining, especially when dealing with difficult emotions and experiences.
8. Difficulty In Maintaining Momentum
Self-reflection can be a solitary activity, and it can be challenging to maintain momentum and motivation without external accountability or support.
It's helpful to be aware of potential challenges as they can inform our actions, but as we also understand what an actively powerful tool self-reflection can be, let’s now get clear on how we can make the most of our reflective time.
How Can I Get The Most From My Reflective Time?
My projects reap the benefits of my reflection. I drift over what I have done so far, and what remains, and this sparks me with creative inspiration. Insights that help me to define my next steps in a very satisfying way.
To get the most from our reflective time, here are some suggestions:
1. Schedule Your Reflection Time
Treat it as a priority and schedule it, just as we would making time for the most important people in our life.
2. Find A Conducive Environment
Choose somewhere relaxed, inspiring, and free from distractions.
3. Start With A Clear Intention
Ask questions like:
o What area of my practice do I need to focus on?
o What are my goals and intentions?
o What are the reasons behind my goals?
o How can I adjust my approach to achieve my goals?
4. Reflect On Your Experiences
Think about:
o Anything that’s bothering you
o A feeling you just can’t shake
o An unfulfilled desire
o A challenge you’d like to overcome
o Your accomplishments from the previous week
o A change you’d like to make
5. Practice Self-Reflection Regularly
Commit to regular self-reflection, to maintain deeper self-connection and nurture personal growth.
6. Be Patient And Kind To Yourself
Remember that self-reflection is a process, and it’s okay to take our time. Be gentle, and don’t be too hard on yourself.
These suggestions can help us make the most of our reflective time. It’s something we’re all capable of doing, and it can bring us so much!
Self-Reflection Is A Gift We Can Give To Ourselves
We’ve seen how self-reflection can contribute to personal growth and increased self-awareness and positive change. It’s clearly offers a generous gift by anyone’s standards!
As I am writing I’ve recalled some very powerful quotations that I’d like to share for you to mull over:
“Life can only be understood backward, but it must be lived forwards.” – Søren Kierkegaard
“Self-reflection is a much kinder teacher than regret is. Prioritise yourself by making a habit of it.” – Andrena Sawyer
Become a self-expert. Reap the rewards. Start reflecting today!
