Introduction:

Could tuning into your intuition be the secret to increased understanding and success for YOU?

I can see now how tapping into my intuition has helped me to trust myself more. I began by paying attention to how often my 'inner voice' was right. I was hindered because most of the time I wanted to be wrong. But 'wanting' doesn't make it real.

That intuitive 'inner voice' was recognising signals and doing the math. Accurately. Research has proven intuition to be a powerful tool.

What Is Intuition?

Intuition has been described as knowledge that arises spontaneously, without conscious reasoning or deliberate thought. Intuition is like a bridge between our conscious and unconscious minds.

In my world it has shown up most as an inner knowing. For example, I've been travelling for the last eighteen months although my logical mind urged me to 'wait' for a better circumstance. A gentle but persistent nudge told me that travel was my way forwards.

Associated theories and research about intuition include:

1. Dual-Process Theory:

Decision-making involves two systems: System 1 (fast, automatic, and intuitive) and System 2 (slow, controlled, and rational).

2. Pattern Recognition:

The ability to find and recognise patterns in the environment. This process is often automatic and unconscious.

3. Heuristics:

Mental shortcuts or rules of thumb that help us make decisions and judgments. They can be both beneficial and detrimental.

4. Emotional Intelligence:

Emotions influence our beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours. Emotional intelligence involves recognising and managing emotions, which is essential for effective intuition.

5. Neuroscience:

Research has discovered specific brain regions and networks involved in intuition. These regions oversee processing emotions, attention, and memory.

Intuition is powerful in decision-making and problem-solving, especially as we recognise our potential biases when we become more self-aware. For example, as I have become more aware of my inclination to want the best to be 'true' I can bring experience to bear on my insights.

Facts About Intuition

Intuition is a bridge of communication which gives us access to an ‘inner knowledge’. It can provide us with fast access to creative ideas and speedy yet correct decisions.

For example, when I meet new people, some part of me can process their expressions and speech patterns and offer me a ‘gut response’ that tells me if something about them feels ‘off’.

Research has shown that key elements include:

1. Intuition Can Be Visualised.

Scientists have used brain scans and other methods to find the neural processes involved in intuition.

2. Intuition Hits Viscerally.

Our instincts often provide us with a gut feeling or hunch before we can consciously process information.

3. Tap In With Mindfulness.

Practices such as meditation can quiet the mind and increase awareness, allowing us to tune in more effectively.

4. Intuition Can Be Grown.

Like any other skill, it can be developed and improved through practice and attention.

5. Intuition Is Not Mystical.

Some people may be more intuitive than others, but intuition is a natural part of human cognition, and it can be studied and understood.

6. Timing Matters.

Intuition can be a more effective decision-making tool than logical analysis in time sensitive situations.

7. It's Linked To Creativity.

Intuition can be a source of innovative ideas and solutions.

8. It's A Source Of Emotional Intelligence.

Intuition can help us understand others and notice subtle cues.

Briefly, intuition is a cognitive process that can help us to process information unconsciously and we can develop it through practice and increasing self-awareness.

Why Some People Don't Trust Their Intuition

Some people may not trust their intuition due to a lack of practice or awareness of their body’s signals, but many people are taught to disregard their intuition from an early age.

For example, when I was younger, I was often told I was imagining things, or overthinking situations. I have needed to unlearn what I was taught and believe what my inner voice is saying to me. Fear will shout at me, but when I hear the quiet voice of caution it is almost always valid.

Some of the things that can drive us to ignoring our intuition are:

1. Traumatic Experiences

Trauma can skew an individual’s intuitive delivery system, leading them to doubt their own instincts.

2. Cognitive Biases

For instance, hindsight bias, overconfidence, and the tendency to perceive order in random events can lead to mistakenly trusting 'common sense' over intuition.

3. Lack of Evidence

People may not trust their intuition because they are not aware of the evidence supporting its accuracy.

4. Lack of Practice

Intuition is a skill and relies on development and practice, without these you can forget you even have it.

Though becoming aware of these factors, we can work to develop and trust our intuition, leading to more effective decision-making and a greater sense of confidence in our instincts.

Why We Should Trust Our Intuition

Our intuition is an unconscious process that can play a crucial role in our decision-making, judgments, and choices. Our innate ability to know something without having to consciously think about it.

For example, in one of my jobs my intuition told me that the people and environment were wrong for me. My logical mind told me I needed to persist for decent amount of time before drawing any conclusions, but time and events later proved my intuition had been spot on.

Consider these thoughts:

1. Evolution History

Intuition allowed our ancestors to make quick decisions in uncertain situations, increasing their chances of survival. It is an essential part of human nature.

2. Key To Success

Many successful leaders, entrepreneurs, and artists, rely on intuition to make their decisions.

3. Complementary Tool To Logic

Intuition provides a unique perspective by finding patterns, making connections, and recognising opportunities that might not be clear through logical analysis alone.

4. Source Of Creativity

Intuition allows us to think creatively and come up with innovative solutions.

5. Guide To Moral Decisions

Trusting our intuition makes us more likely to make morally correct decisions, helping us to align with our values and principles.

6. Key To Emotional Intelligence

Intuition plays a crucial role, as it allows us to recognize and respond to emotional cues.

When we trust our intuition, we can make more effective decisions, achieve success, and live a more fulfilling life.

What Results Can Intuition Produce?

Intuition is a natural ability that allows individuals to make quick and correct decisions, often without conscious reasoning.

For example, when I am researching my intuition often guides me to ask out of the box questions that help me to draw my own understanding on a subject. Even the phrasing of the question can make a significant difference, and 'know' when I've found my own perspective.

Aside from the examples already mentioned like decision-making, creative problem solving, emotional intelligence, and pattern recognition, the results intuition can produce include:

1. Self-Awareness

A deeper understanding of ourselves, our strengths, and our weaknesses, enabling us to make more informed decisions.

2. Intuitive Knowledge

The ability to access knowledge that is not necessarily got through conscious learning or experience. This can be seen in individuals who have exceptional skills or abilities that are not easily explainable.

3. Creative Expression

Intuition can inspire creative expression in various forms, such as art, music, dancing, singing, and writing.

4. Spiritual Growth

It can help spiritual growth and self-discovery, by allowing us to connect with our inner selves and the world around us.

Intuition is a powerful tool that can be harnessed to improve various aspects of life, from personal and professional development to creative expression and spiritual growth. It is an inner resource which if properly tapped can lead us to greater success and fulfilment.

When Does Intuition Work Best?

Research shows that intuition works better certain situations, as several factors can play into its full potency including personal experience and self-trust.

For example, I can lean more naturally into my intuition when I am being creative. It shows up as an urge to experiment or in through playing with known variations and ideas.

Factors which can lend themselves to intuition include:

1. Under time pressure

When time constraints are strict, intuition can provide fast, focused thinking.

2. In complex problems

As proven by top executives and experts in various fields who see data but make their final judgement based on what they know too.

3. When Data Is Limited Or Ambiguous

Where data is scarce or unclear, intuition can help fill the gaps and offer valuable insights especially when personal experience lends itself to the subject.

4. Situations Requiring Creativity And Innovation

Intuition is essential for creative problem-solving and innovation, as it allows us to think freely and come up with novel solutions.

5. When Learning And Experience Are Involved

Intuition is associated with learning and can improve over time, allowing individuals to develop a deeper understanding of their intuition and ratify it with their experience.

In general, intuition works best when it is used in conjunction with rational analysis and critical thinking. By combining intuition with logical reasoning, we can make more effective decisions.

Intuition Tips

Just like memory, critical thinking, and intellect, your intuition is a mental muscle that can be strengthened.

For example, I enjoy using tarot readings as means of assessing my intuition. I listen to what the cards are saying, and to how I respond to that. It is then simple for me to check whether my intuition is correct against what happens afterwards. As I succeed my trust is built.

These tips can help us to develop our intuition:

1. Be Specific

Get specific about the information needed and the kind of answers you’re looking for. The clearer the questions, the clearer the answers.

2. Practice Mindfulness

For instance, meditation can help you tune in by quieting your mind and allowing you to tap into your intuition.

3. Trust Your Instincts

When faced with a difficult decision, look inside and trust your instincts/ listen to your inner voice. Your intuition will be trying to guide you.

4. Learn To Recognise Your Gut Feelings

Pay attention to physical and emotional responses. Trust comes from understanding yourself.

5. Practice Active Listening

It can help you tap into your intuition by focusing wholly on the present moment and tuning into your inner wisdom.

6. Take Small Risks

Stepping outside your comfort zone can help you develop your intuition by pushing you to trust your instincts.

7. Recognise Your Biases

Challenging your biases can help you develop your intuition by allowing you to see things from different perspectives.

Setting yourself small challenges and goals can help you to develop and strengthen your intuition muscle. It is a potential strength that we all have if we choose to tap into to. And in our lives, it is our own inner wisdom that offers the greatest piquancy to life.
